The Office for National Statistics has just announced that the UK unemployment figure has risen to just under 2,500,000 with youth unemployment (workers aged between 16 and 24) accounting for nearly 1,000,000 of that statistic.
The ONS publishes figures every quarter and these latest record-breaking figures relate to the final quarter of 2010. Unemployment now stands at just under 8% with youth unemployment rising by 66,000 from the previous quarter to a new high of 965,000. This means that over 20%, i.e. one in five, is out of work with the vast majority of them never even having received a payslip.
This sad statistic stands in stark contrast to the once-shocking UB40 song, ‘I am the one in ten’ which soared up the music charts back in 1981.
The trend has not been towards part-time working, either. ONS’s figures show that the number of part-time workers has dropped by 62,000 with the vast majority of this reduction being made up of female employees.
