UK National Minimum Wage Rates To Be Increased

UK National Minimum Wage Rates To Be IncreasedThe Government announced today that it has accepted the recommendations of the Low Pay Commission to increase the National Minimum Wage for British workers.

From 1st October 2011, the minimum hourly rate of pay for adults, i.e. those aged 21 and over, will increase by 15p, taking it from £5.93 to £6.08. This represents a rise of just over 2.5%.

The so-called Youth Minimum Wage for 18 to 20 year olds is increase by 6p from £4.92 to £4.98 an hour – an increase of 1.2% – and the rate for 16-17 year old school leavers will go up by 4p from £3.64 to £3.68 an hour (an increase of 1%).

The lack of consistency in percentage increases is highlighted by the ‘bonus’ for apprentices who see their £2.50 an hour wage rise to £2.60, a 4% increase.

Approximately 900,000 workers will benefit from the change.

In March, MP’s voted to freeze their own 1% pay rise but, then again, that would equate to about 36p an hour more given their £65,738 annual salary.

In summary, the new National Minimum Wage Rates For 2011 onwards are as follows:
