Top Job Stories – Week Ending 7th May 2011

We look back over the top ten job stories of the last week and see what caught your eye.

1. Royal Wedding Bank Holiday

There's nothing worse than warm champagne

Pride of place continues to go to the UK’s beanfeast for the well-heeled and, more importantly as far as we are concerned, to the chaos it leaves in its wake. There were yet more postings from disgruntled employees and nearly as many searches from the beleaguered employers who are having to foot the bill for the impromptu day off.

2. Yodel Likely To Lay Off Hundreds Of Workers

A rough call if you work for Yodel, the company which took over part of DHL last year. Yodel now looks set to close half of its sites meaning that hundreds of its workers will face redundancy.

3. Wilkinson’s New Clacton Branch

Wilkinson says that it is about to open a new branch in Clacton which will create 70 job vacancies.

4. Focus DIY Goes Into Administration

Focus could no longer paint over the cracks

The in-focus news of the week was definitely the announcement that the DIY chain, Focus, had gone into administration with the possible loss of 4,000 jobs.

5. John Lewis New Tamworth Store

Retail chain, John Lewis, is to open a 3,900 square metre store in Tamworth this autumn which will create around 200 job vacancies.

6. Westfield Stratford Will Employ 14,000 People

A recent Voltera report claims the Westfield Stratford Shopping Centre in London will create 14,000 job vacancies when it opens – that’s 1,500 more than was originally anticipated. I thought that the only things that got underestimated were MP’s out-of-pocket expenses.

7. Acorn Pets Go Into Administration

Scottish pet store chain, Acorn Pets, has gone into administration with the possible loss of 122 jobs. The topic has certainly proved emotive with some strong words being spoken in our blog comments.

8. Sainsbury’s Thrapston Store

Another red-hot topic. The news that Sainsbury’s is planning to open a supermarket where the old livestock market currently stands has generated a real furore among our visitors. It’s clearly not going to be as popular as Sainsbury’s were hoping – the people of Thrapston will not be treated like sheep.

9. Go To Work In The Raw

If you haven't got anything on, Nude House could be just the job for you.

On a lighter note, Nude House, the only really legitimate employer of nude workers, is looking to recruit more staff. Are you up for it (so to speak)? I can’t say that the idea of writing this blog in the buff appeals to me, never mind doing it in front of a load of gawking strangers. Chilly too <brrrr>.

10. Fallen Hero Brings Legendary Success To Scunthorpe

It’s no myth. Scunthorpe-based, fashion retail company, Fallen Hero, are looking to for more staff to help sell their range of Golden Fleeces and Achilles Heel Protectors.

Well, what will next week have in store? Will the nation still be carping about the Royal Wedding or will there be a new bone of contention? Only time will tell.

That’s my job done.
