That’s it folks. That was the last Bank Holiday till Christmas. Now there’s no excuse for not girding up your loins and looking for a job in earnest. New school year, new academic year, new football season – what more do you need to inspire you? Of course: you need the top blogs from last week.
Here they are.
1. Amazon – Rugeley Warehouse Fulfilment Centre
Up from number 2 are the 700 job vacancies in Amazon’s Staffordshire warehouse. They’ve had thousands of applications already but if they haven’t had yours, go for it. To give yourself the best possible chance, read our letter-writing and interview tips first and make it an application that stands out.
2. Westfield Stratford City Shopping Centre
Get your running shoes on and see if you can grab one of the 14,000 jobs that are being offered as prizes. The London Olympics has certainly got people excited, but even though competition is fierce, it’s well worth having a go.
Down from number 1 but still high up in the ranking, the Tesco’s superstore that will be occupying 14,000 square metres of prime real estate in Yate is going to need hundreds of people to fill its job vacancies. It opens its doors in October. That’s only next month so get your skates on!
4. Marks And Spencer Cheshire Oaks Superstore
M&S certainly believe they have a future on the Wirral. They are siting their 1.4 hectare flagship store at Cheshire Oaks and inviting 350 people to work for them. The news is holding its place in the ranks which proves there is plenty of interest. Be sure to get your application in to them.
5. Tesco Superstore – Forge Retail Park, Glasgow
There’ll be a bit of a one-stop-shop when Tesco have completed their superstore on the Forge Retail Park, Glasgow, converting the old Woolworths building. They’re projecting a café, phone shop, photo printers, opticians and dry cleaners as well as all the usual. It will create 350 much-needed job vacancies.
6. Morrisons’ Wrexham Superstore
The superstore that Morrisons are constructing in Wrexham, where the Council Direct Works Division Depot used to be, is going to need 350 people to work on its premises. Be sure to get your application off in plenty of time as all the signs suggest the competition will be fierce.
7. Marks And Spencer Crystal Peaks Store
The Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre in Sheffield is to receive a 5,100 square metre Marks and Spencer store, which will be the 5th M&S store in the city. They expect to need 140 people to work for them in their clothing, homeware, food and gifts departments – and also their Café Revive.
Santa’s already started packing his sled, and Argos are already recruiting temporary Christmas workers of whom they expect to need in the order of 12,000.
They are looking for enthusiastic and passionate people who can help to make the workplace a fun environment. If that’s you, and if you were to get one of these jobs, you would start more-or-less straight away (in September) in order to be up-to-speed for the Christmas rush on toys, games and presents generally.
There’s a 10% discount on your own Christmas presents if you buy them in-store, and they wouldn’t necessarily say goodbye to you come the New Year. Last year a good proportion of temporary workers were offered permanent jobs.
This year, in a stroke of genius, Argos, Thomson and TVI have clubbed together to create whole-year-long jobs whereby travel and tour reps, normally at a loose end in the winter months, can swell Argos’ workforce just when it’s needed.
Not quite the same volume (thankfully) but the quality was there even if the quantity wasn’t. For example, we had one twit tell us no less than 5 times that he was a student wanting work. See below for the top entries.
10. How To Write A Covering Letter For Your Job Application
Your covering letter is probably the first thing a prospective employer will see and first impressions count. Does it really speak for you? Will it make someone want to know more about the person who wrote it? We can help you achieve that all-important effect if you visit our section. Lots of people are doing just that which is why the page is ranking among our top 10.

Just outside of the top ten:

Dipstick of the Week
The winner of this week’s ‘award is:
“any vacancies”
Succinct and to the point.
Seriously, apart from all the considerations of us having no connection with the store this was supposedly aimed at, does anyone think that in an age when employment opportunities are like gold-dust, this level of rudeness is going to wash? Every week I get my share of ignorant people like this writing in – and they wonder why they haven’t got a job. And that’s why we have the ‘Am I Unemployable?’ page!
So, that’s it. I wish you success in your job-hunting and thank you for subscribing to our newsletter.
