Top 10 Job Stories Week Ending 30th July 2011

There was a quiet start to the week but it soon hotted up with some big stories breaking during the last 7 days.

There is a ‘first’ this week as the top ten becomes the top eleven due to tenth place being shared between a newcomer and one of our regulars.

Anyway, here are the top ten:

1. Amazon – Rugeley Warehouse Fulfilment Centre

It's still Amazon

This just goes on and on. Although interest has waned a little since it first appeared, there is still a lot of attention being paid to the 700 job vacancies working in the UK’s largest on-spec warehouse (6.4 hectares).

2. Morrisons’ Wrexham Superstore

Morrisons are building a superstore in Wrexham in the old council Direct Works Depot. There will be 350 jobs on offer at the end of the year when it opens. Trouble is, with all the roads being so badly maintained, will anyone be able to get there?

3. Westfield Stratford City Shopping Centre

Is Westfield just a daydream?

The massive multi-million pound development with its 14,000 job vacancies continues to prove popular. Will it live up to its promise?

4. Asda Superstore In Birkenhead

A new superstore is being built in Birkenhead by Asda who are engaged in a very ambitious expansion programme at the moment. Anyway, if you live on the Wirral, here are 250 full-time and 150 part-time job vacancies.

5. Amazon Customer Service Centre In Edinburgh

If you don’t like the idea of Staffordshire, how about lovely Lothian? Amazon are building a new customer service centre that will create an astounding 900 job vacancies.

6. Marks And Spencer Cheshire Oaks Superstore

Marks and Spencer are building a huge 14,000 square metre flagship superstore at Cheshire Oaks on the Wirral. An impressive 350 job vacancies are expected to be created.

7. Tesco Yate Superstore

Tesco will be opening a massive 14,000 square metre superstore at Yate in Gloucestershire this October. Hundreds of job vacancies will be created at the supermarket which will sell groceries, clothing, electrical goods, phones, etc, as well as printing photographs and dispensing medicines.

8. John Lewis, Tamworth

John Lewis are about to open a £7m ‘At Home’ store in Tamworth. There has been an incredible amount of this stalwart in our top ten so sharpen your pencil if you fancy applying for one of he 200 job vacancies that it promises.

9. Tesco – Ings Road Retail Park, Wakefield

Down from last week’s number 2 is the story of how Tesco intend to use the former Sainsbury’s space on the Ings Road Retail Park in Wakefield. If they get the consent, recruitment for this store will be via the Regeneration Partnership store which means a significant proportion of the job vacancies will go to the long-term unemployed.

10.= Sainsbury’s Kelso

Sainsbury’s are on a recruitment drive (which finishes on Wednesday) at the library on Bowmont Street in an effort to fill the 200 job vacancies for the new supermarket at Pinnaclehill.

10.= Am I Unemployable?

I command you to arrange me an interview

Some rare specimens this week, including one just this very morning ‘commanding me’ to arrange an interview for her. This beggars belief at so many different levels! While I am a terminal sceptic regarding our government’s attitude towards the unemployed and especially the number that it claims are out of work, some people are so pig-ignorant that there is no way anyone could give them a job. Well, there’s always customer services, I suppose …

This week just raced by. It was also the week we passed our 1,000 blog entries milestone – next stop 10,000!
