In a week which saw the demise of Jane Norman and T J Hughes, I had expected those stories to figure highly in our top ten but clearly good news has ‘sold’ better than bad this week. That’s probably a good thing.
So, without further ado, let’s examine what caught your collective eyes.
There was a job fair at the Forum in Norwich yesterday. By all accounts, it was well-attended and there were some big names on hand. Unfortunately it’s been and gone but its popularity (as witnessed by its lofty position here and also by the fact that we are getting a lot of clicks days after the event), should encourage further job fairs in the Norwich area.
What’s good enough for Norwich is good enough for Watford. Hot on the heels in the popularity stakes comes Thursday’s big event at the Langley Banqueting Suite in Watford. Did you go along?
3. Westfield Stratford City Shopping Centre
It’s still there. You just can’t shake the interest in the 14,000 job vacancies on offer at the Westfield Stratford City Shopping Centre. We haven’t had any feedback from people applying yet, though.
4. Amazon Customer Service Centre At Dunfermline
Amazon are building a new customer service centre that will sit next to the existing 9 hectare Fulfilment Centre in Dunfermline. There will 500 full-time and 400 part-time job vacancies created – hence the interest, no doubt.
5. Waitrose New Online Store In Acton
Up one place from last week is the story about Waitrose’s new ‘virtual supermarket’ which is set to open in October with the creation of 350 job vacancies. So, if you like wide open spaces (because this place is huge) and you don’t think e-commerce means selling those little pills behind the garages, this could be just the ticket for you.
6. Discount UK – New Store In Wrexham
From sunny Wakefield comes a new retail chain which is set to open its 8th store in the old Woolies shop in even sunnier Wrexham. There will be 40 job vacancies at the new store that will specialise in selling bargain-basement items priced from 99p to £25. One way of discouraging shoplifting, I suppose.
I’ve had to wade through some truly choice idiots this week. What is it with people? I even put a link to the relevant store’s job page on many of my blogs and I still get things like, “I want job” (or ‘jub’ as one twit kept calling it). Apart from the rank stupidity of it, there’s rarely a ‘please’ or ‘thank you’ so if I were the actual employer, my natural reaction would be to disregard it completely. Please, no more “When will you be interviewing?”. I ain’t and, even if I were, I wouldn’t want you – got it?
8. Asda Take Over Oldham Netto Store
Asda are taking over the Netto store on Huddersfield Road in Oldham as part of their 247-store, £778m buy-out. Next Saturday is your last chance to enjoy Netto’s sparkling range of products because, after that, it will close until Tuesday, 26th July when it will re-open as an Asda with 14 extra job vacancies.
9. How To Write A Covering Letter
One of my favourite hobby-horses. Your CV may be what clinches the job interview but it’s your covering letter that gets your CV considered in the first place. If it’s a scruffy bit of paper, clearly mass-produced, or contains nothing that effectively says “I am the right person for the job because …”, you don’t stand an earthly. Boost your prospects by reading this article and making a few simple changes to your applications. We don’t even charge you for reading it!
10. Marks And Sparks Cheshire Oaks Superstore
Marks and Spencer are constructing a 14,000 square metre superstore at Cheshire Oaks on the Wirral. There will be about 350 job vacancies when the shop opens and you can be absolutely certain that the competition will be very tough. You’ll find a big feature about all the job types available at Marks and Spencer on this site.
With it quite possibly being the most difficult time in living memory to get a job, you’ve got to make every chance count. However, if you’re prepared to put the time in and see the act of getting a job as being a job in itself, you will get there in the end.
You’ll find quite a few ideas about maximising your chances in the editorials section of our website. You might try cold calling, for example. Don’t knock it – read the article!
Good luck.
