Top 10 Job Stories Week Ending 28th May 2011

Our weekly summary of what you decided was important to you in the last 7 days.

 1. New Brighton Jobs Fair

No, not that Brighton!

If you trundled down to the South Coast on your Vespa last week, you made a definite mistake. There was a jobs fair but it was in New Brighton on the Wirral and it was last Monday. If you did get to the right place, what did you think of it?

 2. Amazon Customer Service Area In Edinburgh

If you like handling books, and you live or are prepared to live north of the border, Amazon’s new customer service area will be employing around 900 people. That’s a lot of jobs on offer, people!

3. Premier Inn, Bury

Whitbread’s latest hotel opens in Bury on 4th July (any American influence here?). NB that’s Bury, Manchester, not Bury as in of the St Edmunds variety. Anyway there are 65 jobs being promised.

4. Westfield Stratford City Shopping Centre

This has been in the charts so long that I’ve run out of snide remarks to make about it. So, if everything goes to plan, there are 14,000 jobs to be had. Good luck.

 5. B&Q To Take Over 31 Focus Stores

Last call for the great Focus DIY sell-off

Not surprisingly the Focus story continues to run. It’s beginning to resemble a disaster film as various groups get rescued yet you know that there are some who are going to go down with the ship. Good news for those staff saved with the B&Q take-over.

6. BM Bargains Take Over 11 Focus Stores

… and more of the same as BM Bargains step into the fray.

7. New Derby Argos store

Another familiar favourite. Argos’ new store at the Kingsway Retail Park in Derby opens in a couple of weeks’ time (18th June to be precise) and this page has had hundreds and hundreds of hits so my guess is that getting a job is not going to be an easy matter. Better start memorising that catalogue so you can impress at interview!

8. Am I Unemployable?

Some people are just destined to be losers

Now this is my personal favourite of all the editorials and blogs that I’ve written. Every day we get loads of posts from dimwits who think we are the actual company we are writing about. And, even if we were, would you give a job to someone who writes, “were r details” or “vey intrest” (and that’s all … no other text around it)? The serious side is, how can you expect to get a job when you don’t read instructions and can’t present yourself, either?

9. John Lewis, Tamworth

Another surprising hot story. There are around 200 job vacancies being scrambled for here, so, like the Argos story above, you’d better brush up by reading our interview and application techniques and put your best foot forward.

10. Do You Get Paid For The Royal Wedding?

This blog really refuses to die even though I’m not taking any more questions. We are still getting people bleating about why they don’t get paid double or get an extra day of holiday. I do, however, admit to being surprised by the way in which SME’s (Small and Medium Enterprises) have taken it all lying down. Perhaps there are so few left that they are afraid to raise their heads above ground for fear of being shot at. Anyway, I hope our blog lasts a damned sight longer than the marriage is likely to.

Well, that was the week reviewed. A few new contenders join the ranks of the old faithful, many of whom lurk just outside the Top Ten, threatening to reappear at a moment’s notice.

All that’s left for me now is to choose some suitably unsettling photographs and wish you all a good Bank Holiday week.
