Top 10 Job Stories Week Ending 23rd July 2011

A very busy week on the blog site with the top hitter dominating by scoring more hits than the top 6 put together. We also recorded our first dead-heat in our top 10 job stories.

I was a bit surprised to see that the 670 job losses at the Co-op, as they shed their door-to-door insurance people, didn’t figure in our top 10 nor did the 2,800 jobs saved at Superquinn following the Musgrave Group’s takeover.

That aside, let’s not put off the big moment any more, so here are the top ten:

1. Amazon – Rugeley Warehouse Fulfilment Centre

Still flying high and showing no signs of relinquishing its position, the story about how Amazon are leasing the UK’s largest (6.4 hectare) on-spec warehouse for 15 years and creating 700 job vacancies in the process.

2. Tesco – Ings Road Retail Park, Wakefield

Tesco wants to use the space vacated by Sainsbury’s on the Ings Road Retail Park in Wakefield. If approved, the supermarket will become a Regeneration Partnership store with a large proportion of the job vacancies going to the longterm unemployed.

3. Zombies Wanted In Falmouth

Beware of zombies

If you’re in Falmouth but would rather be in films, now’s your chance. World War Z has broken out and the film company is looking for extras to appear in this huge production alongside the likes of Brad Pitt.

4.= John Lewis Store In Tamworth

John Lewis is set to open their £7m ‘At Home’ store in Tamworth. We’ve had this in our top ten so long that I’m thinking about writing a keyboard macro to automatically copy and paste it. Do expect the 200 job vacancies to be hotly contested, won’t you?

4.= Westfield Stratford City Shopping Centre

Also in at No. 4 and yet another old job story that won’t lie down. We cover the multi-million pound Westfield Stratford Shopping Centre development and the intention to create 14,000 job vacancies when it eventually opens.

6. Asda Superstore In Birkenhead

Staying at No 6, the story of how Asda are constructing a superstore in Birkenhead which should create 250 full-time and 150 part-time job vacancies.

7. Amazon Customer Service Centre In Edinburgh

My image of customer services

Clearly Rugeley is the place to be if you fancy joining Amazon. Despite creating 900 job vacancies at the new customer service centre, it is still attracting a lot less attention than its Staffordshire counterpart.

8. Morrisons’ Wrexham Superstore

Morrisons will be constructing a new superstore in Wrexham at the site of the old Direct Works Division. Now they don’t need anyone to maintain the roads, they can all go and work at the supermarket – there’s 350 jobs up for grabs when it opens at the end of the year.

9. Marks And Spencer Cheshire Oaks Superstore

Up one place and another old favourite is the 14,000 square metre Marks and Spencer flagship superstore at Ellesmere Port on the Wirral. Marks and Spencer say that they expect to create 350 much sought-after job vacancies.

10. Am I Unemployable?

Some people just take them

How could any week be complete without my update on the latest braindead creatures that have crossed my path (and I’m not talking about the sort Brad Pitt will be killing – although there’s a thought)? We’ve had people think we are both Tesco and Sainsbury’s at the same time, someone else wanted to work in a warhorse (did he think this was Troy?), and so many rude gits grumbling that they couldn’t find our application form. Even if we were the company we’ve written about, do they think an attitude like that will land them an interview?

This was the second busiest week in Job Vacancies’ history and it certainly felt like it!
