Top 10 Job Stories Week Ending 21st May

Here’s your chance to review what made the news on our blogsite last week.

1. Westfield Stratford City Shopping Centre

Will it be first prize or the booby prize for Westfield?

A firm favourite day in, day out, is the Westfield Shopping Centre Development in London with its promise of 14,000 job vacancies. One wonders, though, how many will get made redundant once the London Olympics are over?

2. New Derby Argos store

Judging by the amount of hits this blog is getting, competition for Argos’ 40 job vacancies at their new Kingsway Retail Park store is going to be tough. Don’t forget – the store opens on 18th June.

3. Yodel redundancies

The former DHL employees who were briefly part of Yodel certainly won’t be celebrating this blog’s heady third place in our weekly top ten stories. With half of Yodel’s sites closing, hundreds of workers are now facing redundancy.

4. Asda’s plans for Dudley Netto

Asda’s £½m expenditure on doing up the old Netto store on Dudley High Street looks like money well spent judging by your interest in the 16 job vacancies created by the new supermarket. Don’t worry about the Netto staff – they’re all coming along for the ride, too.

5. Do you get paid for the Royal Wedding?

"Will you still love me tomorrow?"

"Will you still love me tomorrow?"

The big question on my mind is, “Will this blog still be in the top ten when Billy and Kitty get divorced?”. Won’t someone other than me please see that the sheer volume of hits that this blog is getting reflects the level of aggravation that the event caused British companies?

6. Strike it lucky with Marks and Spencer’s new Bexhill store

Time to let go of your balls and pick up your shopping baskets as the Ocean Bowling Unit in Bexhill turns into an M & S complete with Café Revive. Did you go along to see the plans when they were on display last week?

7. New Brighton Jobs Fair

No, not the Brighton in Sussex, the one in the Wirral. Don’t worry if you didn’t know about it – the event’s on Monday and you can find full details of it by clicking on the above link. We’ve even given you a full list of the companies attending so that you can get your spiel sorted. Don’t forget to dress to impress!

8. How to write a covering letter for your job application

A skill anyone who is serious about finding a job should master. Careless writing costs prospects (to coin a phrase). If you’re serious about not leaving your pit in the morning, don’t read this blog; otherwise, give it a long and serious look.

9. Wickes don’t lose Focus as 13 stores and their staff get saved

Good news for staff at 13 of defunct Focus’ stores as rival builders merchants, Wickes, put in a successful purchase bid to the administrators. Given the thousands of people affected by the demise of Focus, this is unsurprisingly a popular blog item.

 10. “G’dday. There’s tungsten in them thar hills,” say Wolf Minerals

Will the tungsten mine seem a bright idea for its neighbours?

Good news for those fancying a career in mining as Wolf Minerals plan to revitalise the old tungsten mine at Hemerdon in Devon. Not so good news, perhaps, if you happen to own a house nearby. If it all works out, there will be around 500 job vacancies created.

Well, that was the end of another week. We had many of the same old protagonists but there were also some new ones to think about. If you’ve read the blogs and had some strong feelings – for or against – why not leave a comment?
