Top 10 Job Stories Week Ending 16th July 2011

This week we had some real changes in our charts and the top two absolutely dominated our traffic statistics.

Surprisingly, absent from the listings were the 4,000 jobs being created at Leeds Eastgate, Sainsbury’s superstore in Ponsharden, and today’s ‘Stafford Works’ Job Fair.

Right, and without further ado, the top ten:

1. Amazon – Rugeley Warehouse Fulfilment Centre

Getting more hits than the other 9 in our top 10 combined, this item really hit our headlines and stayed there all week. The story is that Amazon have leased a massive 6.4 hectare warehouse for 15 years and, more importantly, are creating 700 job vacancies.

 2. Become A Zombie In Falmouth

Looking for extras

The other main story of the week was how World War Z is being filmed and a host of zombie extras are being recruited. This is your big chance to get noticed as Brad Pitt zaps you with whatever weapon they’ve provided him with.

3. Amazon Customer Service Centre In Edinburgh

Up one place for Amazon and their new Customer Service Centre being built next to their Customer Fulfilment Centre in Dunfermline. When the facility opens later this year, 900 job vacancies will be created.

4. John Lewis Store In Tamworth

John Lewis is in the final stages of getting ready to open their £7m ‘At Home’ store in Tamworth. This page has been in our charts for weeks meaning that the competition for the 200 job vacancies will be really tough.

 5. Westfield Stratford City Shopping Centre

Another old soldier who just won’t die. There are 14,000 job vacancies up for grabs in the new Westfield Stratford City Shopping Centre as a wide range of retail stores open.

6. Asda Superstore In Birkenhead

Down from last week’s Number 1. Asda are constructing a superstore in Birkenhead and expect to create 250 full-time and 150 part-time job vacancies.

7. How To Write A Covering Letter

Make an impression

Staying at Number 7 for another week, how to write a covering letter. If you’ve never bothered to think about it, you are either incredibly fortunate or you are very unemployed. A good covering letter is what gets you an interview and there is a great deal of science and logic behind what makes a great one. This blog will enlighten you.

8. Am I Unemployable?

… and staying at Number 8. I keep hoping that the cretins who tell me to send details of ‘jop’ (no typo) or complaining that they haven’t heard back about their application will just go back from whence they came. I had one this morning say that he wanted to know how to apply to Amazon (our Number 1). If you go there, you will see a link to ‘More about Amazon jobs’. Clicking that takes you straight to the Amazon job search page. Perhaps all these brain-dead people should be told to relocate to Falmouth. They could do excellent zombie impersonations.

9. Waitrose New Online Store In Acton

Down from second place is Waitrose virtual store in Acton, London. This is a massive warehouse where they will sort out online orders for customers. There will be 350 job vacancies when it opens but expect a tough scrap for interviews. Better make sure that covering letter’s a cracker, hadn’t you?

10. Amazon – Phoenix, Fulfilment Centre

See the point?

… and it’s Amazon again. Across the pond, they are building an 11-hectare Fulfilment  Centre (or ‘Center’) in Phoenix, Arizona. Would you believe that it’s the fourth in Arizona alone? Anyway, there will be literally ‘hundreds’ of job vacancies created when it opens this Fall (Autumn in English).

Well, this week we were certainly ‘sold down the river’ as Amazon dominated by occupying First, Third and Tenth spots. I admit to being more than a little surprised by the incredible popularity of Cornwall’s zombie shoot (sic).

This was the busiest week in Job Vacancies’ history and one in which our Google ranking was upgraded.

That’s it for me for another week. I hope you found some inspiration on our site and wish you all the best in your job hunting.
