Top 10 Job Stories Week Ending 14th May

Here is a quick look at what made the news on our site last week.

1. The Sun Roadshow

The Sun went on the road with its usual touch of glamour, of course.

The Sun newspaper has been running a jobs roadshow across the UK this week. Unfortunately (for those who couldn’t make it) it’s over now but no doubt there will be others. Keep coming back to our website to find out!

2. Focus DIY

The saga of the bankrupt DIY chain continues with the news that salvation may be at hand for some of Focus’ former employees. Rivals B&Q are to take over 31 Focus stores in a deal worth £23m; does this hint at the possibility of help for the chain’s other workers?

3. Do You Get Paid For The Royal Wedding?

There are still many of you worrying about whether you’re going to get your rather stale piece of the Royal Pie. The number of postings has dropped but the blog is still proving very popular as per its No. 3 ranking in our Top 10 of the week.

4. New Derby Argos store

The 18th June is the big day if you are looking to grab one of the 40 job vacancies being created by Argos at their new Kingsway Retail Park store in Derby. If you didn’t know already, it’s going to be in B&Q’s old spot. Good luck, though – there’s been loads of hits on this blog (witness the No. 4 position).

5. Yodel Redundancies

The story that Yodel (who took over courier firm DHL last year) is now going to close 50% of its sites is still (understandably) bothering many of you. It’s a saga of corporate rationalisation brought about by squeeze economics with the real victims being chosen from the usual bunch of patsies.

6. Westfield Stratford City Shopping Centre

Not surprisingly, with the whiff of 14,000 job vacancies being created in London, this project is generating loads of interest. Will it prove another political White Elephant, though? Don’t worry – they’ll just put VAT up to 25% to cover any losses.

7. John Lewis store in Tamworth

For a relatively small store, this blog sure is getting a lot of traffic. If our statistics are anything to go by, the 200 jobs that will be up for grabs are going to be fiercely competed for so you’d better visit some of our jobs advice pages to give yourself the best chance. Perhaps that’s why our No. 10 (not the Downing Street one, but the REAL No. 10 – see below) is flying so high!

Fancy a spot of filling in at the pie factory?

8. James Hall Pie Factory

If you live in or around Preston and fancy making pies for Spar, this is for you. Aye, tha’s real ecky-thoomp stoof fur-ee lad. Anyway, having inflamed all of our readers from the Northeast of the UK, let’s go back to considering the dozens of jobs the pie factory is offering and also the adjacent crèche which makes it perfect for mothers of young children.

9. Nude House Jobs

You lot are still obsessed about working in the nude, aren’t you? I can’t see the attraction, myself, and, thinking back to all the people I’ve worked with over the years, I can put my hand on my heart and honestly say that they all looked far better in their office garb than they would have done in the nuddy. What I can’t make up my mind on, though, is whether I feel sorry for all the losers who typed in ‘Nude young girls’ on Google and found our page by mistake! Maybe they got what they deserved.

The sort of thing which goes through an MP's mind?

10. How To Write A Covering Letter For Your Job Application

Definitely an ability that is vital to acquire because so many people just chuck their chances away by writing crappy covering letters. That’s just plain silly. With a little care and attention, you can craft something that will catch the eye of the interviewer and turn you from an ‘also ran’ into a ‘must see’. We explain the knack in our usual straightforward and plain-speaking way.

Well, that was it. Thank you for reading our review of the week. Any bets on what No. 1 will be next week? I fancy the Jobcentres closure story (what goes through the minds of MP’s?) but then, I don’t do the clicking, do I?
