The Swan Hunter shipyard in Wallsend is to be revitalised with a new contract to decommission and salvage the defunct North Sea gas platforms.
The work will create 35 jobs in a shipyard which ceased building ships ten years ago after 140 years in service although it has continued to operate a marine design and engineering service.
Veolia Environmental Services and Peterson SBS have formed a partnership for the project which will use the famous North Tyneside Council-owned shipyard to break down and recycle approximately 10,500 tonnes of steel over the next six months.
The first barge arrived yesterday bringing with it a 17-storey high structure from the Shell UK Indefatigable Gas Field.
