The Easter weekend will soon be upon us – the 22nd to 25th April to be precise – and that, combined with the dreaded Royal Wedding will mean that many people will be taking extended periods of absence from their jobs.
If you are out of work and are keen to feel that you are doing some form of paid work, this is where you could benefit. It does mean that you will be working over Easter but, if you’ve been unemployed for a while, haven’t you had enough holiday?
Here are some ideas for Easter jobs but the rationale behind them is simple. There are two sorts of job available – those where the regular employees have taken a break but their employer still needs to get the job done and those where the demand is caused by people being leisure-consumers with an excess of spare time.
OK, these are all probably going to be Minimum Wage but you might well be offered time-and-a-half or even double time if you don’t mind working some anti-social hours.
Jobs where employers need people to cover
Supermarkets
Supermarkets always need more staff and there will be vacancies of one sort or another. With employees disappearing to be with their families, you might well get some work stacking shelves, collecting trolleys, moving stock around the warehouse etc.
DIY stores
I did a piece last week on DIY stores. Not only do they need help covering for staff absences, Easter is also the time when homeowners take it into their heads to start doing work around the house. If you have a helpful attitude and like working with people, you could do well.
Shops
It’s not just the major retailers who need people to bail them out during the holiday periods; for a smaller shop losing 20%-plus of its staff can present major problems. Try everyone and that includes the ‘corner shops’.
Hotels
Hotels can get busy over Easter and, if staff are on leave, it can make them glad of someone who doesn’t mind a bit of temporary work. There is always work for someone to clean rooms, make beds etc.
Petrol stations
The main daytime slots may well be taken up but many stations are now 24-hours so, if you don’t mind it, find out about working the night shift.
Jobs where the employer needs people to help cope with demand
Bars
Have you ever worked in a bar? If not, you can soon learn. At Easter, bars in town centres or near tourist attractions can get very busy. They need people to serve drinks, clear away glasses, bring in stock and so forth. Go along to the main ones in your area but pick a quiet time.
Tourist attractions
It may be asking too much to become a guide in the short period before Easter but there are often jobs handling tickets, selling trinkets in the gift shop and directing drivers about where to park. What about at a toll bridge?
Car park attendants
While some car parks can become very quiet at Easter, many others get choked. Car park attendants, particularly near major tourist attractions, are needed to direct traffic, to ensure that tickets are bought and to check parking times are not exceeded.
Cafes and restaurants
If you’re near a motorway service station, that would definitely be a good bet, but any restaurant or cafe may be glad of someone who can wait on tables, collect used plates and cutlery, stack the dishwasher and so forth.
If you want to earn some cash, put the Easter eggs on hold (they’re cheaper immediately after Easter, anyway) and get out there.
