Cruise Ship Entertainment Jobs - Cards & ChipsCasino Staff

Although there are some casinos on UK-registered ships, they tend to be much more common on American ones. Because of local gambling laws, casinos are closed when ships are in port. All casino employees will be expected to have a proven track record, a clean criminal record and a good knowledge of blackjack, roulette, craps, baccarat, poker and keno.

Cruise ships make a very high level of profit from their captive-audience clients. Pay-outs are not set at the same level as they are in land-side casinos and this derives an important source of revenue for the cruise ship companies.

Some cruises are almost exclusively devoted to gambling although that is less common in ones originating from the UK.

Because of its importance, cruise operators are very selective over who they recruit. Consequently, it is probably only worth applying if you have an above average employment history in the field of gambling.

Casino Manager

The Casino Manager is responsible for overseeing all the casino staff – the cashiers, croupiers, dealers and slot technicians. Since the job involves keeping detailed accounts, a background in book-keeping or accountancy can be helpful.

A typical salary would be in the order of £25,000 to £30,000 p.a.

Casino Croupier / Casino Dealer

Experience in the job is essential and many ships may well ask for a formal qualification such as from a Casino School. Dexterity and a calmly efficient nature are essential.

Remuneration is typically circa £15,000 p.a.

Casino Cashier

The job requires a proven record in handling cash (such as someone who has worked as a bank cashier). You will need to keep immaculate records and have a developed sense of ‘when something doesn’t look or feel right’. This is a highly responsible position.

Expect to get paid around £15,000 p.a.

Slot Technician

Apart from a thorough working knowledge of mechanics and electronics, you will be expected to have several years’ experience in repairing and maintaining slot machines.

Remuneration is around £20,000 p.a.

Bingo Caller

This is often one of the crew members but, if the ship is big enough, it may be a post in itself. Presentability, an outgoing personality and confidence when speaking publicly are paramount. A witty sense of humour is also essential.

Remuneration for a full-time position would be around £20,000 p.a.
